What is a fixie or fixed gear bike, exactly?
A fixed gear bike is a bicycle that has a fixed cog and no freewheeling mechanism. Translation: If the wheels move, the pedals move. You can pedal forward or pedal backward, but as long as you’re moving, the pedals are moving too.
Of course, we understand that riding fixed is not for everyone. That’s why every bike we sell comes with a front and rear brake and a “flip-flop” hub, meaning that with the back tire one way you ride fixed, but if you flip it around you ride it as a freewheeling single-speed.
Are they street legal? Do your bicycles come with brakes?
You may have heard that fixed gear bicycles are banned in some areas. That is true in Japan, Beijing, and a few other places. This actually just means fixed gear bikes without brakes are banned. Recently in California this was in the news:
“Ventura County officials are considering banning fixed-gear bicycles from county park trails after a bicycle collision severely injured a rider. A hit-and-run collision between two bicyclists on the Ojai Valley Trail left one man critically injured in September, parks officials said. The other rider, who fled after the crash, apparently was riding a bicycle without brakes at a high speed, according to Ron Van Dyck, parks director.”
The Consumer Products Safety Commission requires bicycles to be equipped with at least one brake. At Baseline Bicycles our standards for safety are even more strict and we equip all of our bicycles with both a front and rear brake. Safety first.
What size bicycle should I order?
We want your bike to be the best fit possible which is why we have provided a sizing chart to help you determine the size you need.
Please refer to our sizing chart.
What accessories will I need with my new bike?
Most importantly you will want to purchase a helmet to protect yourself in the event of an accident. You will also want to get a good lock to prevent your bike from being stolen. If you are planning to ride at night we also suggest mounting lights on your bike.
How do I maintain my bike?
The good news here is that maintaining a fixed single gear bicycle is relatively easy because it has so many fewer parts than a multi-geared bicycle. As with any other bicycle, the bike should be kept clean and the chain should be lubricated monthly for smooth riding. Also, wear on the brakes and wear on the tires should be monitored and adjustments or replacements made as necessary. Routine maintenance can be handled by yourself. There are many useful written and video instructions to be found online. More extensive repairs should be done at a good bicycle shop with qualified technicians.
Will I receive my bike assembled?
All of our Bikes come 90% assembled. All you need to do is attach the pedals, front wheel, and handlebars when you receive the bike. We recommend you take it to your local bike shop for a safety check.
How do I make payment?
All payments are handled through Paypal. You can pay with your credit card even if you don’t have a Paypal account.
How secure is ordering on the Baseline Bicycles site?
It is 100% safe and secure. The transaction is done through the secure servers of a third party processor, Paypal. You do not need to create a Paypal account and can just pay with your credit card.

What is your return policy?
We are confident you will be satisfied with your bike and so we offer a 30-day money back guarantee. We cannot refund the return shipping, but as long as you send us the bike back in the original packaging, we will refund you the cost of the bike. See our full return policy here.
